MOTHER NATURE WINS HAGERSTOWN’S SPEEDWEEK
With showers forecast, a massive swirling front over the Northeast gained momentum to the southwest during the late afternoon hours and took aim at Hagerstown Speedway Wednesday evening. After sizing up the situation, officials were forced to cancel the fourth night of the 19th Annual Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speedweek. Rain checks will be honored up to 18 months.
Since joining the Speedweek program, Hagerstown has had to overcome weather related obstacles each time it’s tried to run the program. In 2006, heavy rains all week had more than half the infield flooded, but the show went on with Lance Dewease winning. Dewease returned to victory in 2007 when it rained throughout the afternoon and then high humidity after it cleared resulted in a delay. Last year when Jeff Shepard won, it was under similar conditions.
Winners so far have included Brian Montieth at Lincoln, Stevie Smith at Bedford and Chad Kemenah at Grandview
The programs continue at Williams Grove both Thursday and Friday, then to Port Royal on Saturday and ending at Selinsgrove on Sunday.
Point standings after the three completed events are: 1.Greg Hodnett, 444; 2.Chad Layton, 3909; 3.Cody Darrah; 365; 4.Mark Smith, 359; 5.Doug Esh, 339; 6.Chad Kemenah, 307; 7.Justin Henderson, 300; 8.Keith Kauffman, 285; 9.Daryn Pittman, 283; 10.Fred Rahmer, 278.
This Saturday’s (July 4) racing features the longest running and one of the most prestigious late model programs on the schedule, the 44th Annual Johnny Roberts Memorial. Included on the program will be the Late Model Sportsman Clash with $1,000 to win and the pure stocks. The holiday program also includes a spectacular fireworks display. Rain date is Sunday.
